Canine Hip Dysplasia MV&Z
Sommer, Edgar Luiz; Fratocchi, Carlo Leonardo Grieco.
Hip dysplasia is the bad formation of the coxofemoral joints, happening in all the races, mainly in the big ones and of fast growth. Its transmission is hereditary, recessive, intermittent and polygenic. Nutritionals, biomechanicals and environmental factors, associated to the hereditary, they worsen the dysplasia condition. The suspicion to the clinical exam is possible, but it is the radiographic study, usually to the twelve months of age in most of the races, by means of correct positioning of the animal, that defines the diagnosis. For so much the patient should be free from any reaction. This state is reached with the general anesthesia, of preference. The patient should be positioned in dorsal recumbency, pelvic limbs in posterior extention, of the...

The importance of mastitis in dairy production in Brazil MV&Z
Costa, Elizabeth Oliveira da.
Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland that causes severe economic losses due to reduced milk production, expence on pharmaceuticals, veterinary care, discarding of milk after treatment and discarding of affected animals. This inflammatory process may have distinct origins, but all cases of economic importance are caused by microorganisms. According to their origin and means of transmission, the main etiological agents were put together in two groups, contagious microorganisms (Streptococcus agalactiae, Staphylococcus sp, e Corynebacterium bovis) transmitted mainly during rnilking and environmental microorganisms (Streptococcus uberis, Enterobacteriaceae, fungos, algae of the genus Prototheca, etc.).Clinical mastitis is characterized by visible...

Repair of experimentally induced perforating bone lesions in the distal phalanx of normal horses MV&Z
Ribeiro, Max Gimenez; Nicoletti, José Luiz de Mello; Thomassian, Armen; Hussni, Carlos Alberto; Alves, Ana Liz Garcia.
The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical, radiological and anatomopathological evolution of experimentally induced bone perforating lesions in the distal phalanx of normal horses. Eight adult horses of both sexes totally free of feet disorders were used in the trial. Lesions were produced through the sole of the distal phalanx, using a miller and an electric drill. Results demonstrated that the technique used allowed a complete and precise approach to the pedal bone; lesions were repaired without any impairment to locomotion. This technique may be an alternative for the usual bone curettage of septic pedal osteitis, keratoma, distal phalangeal fracture and sequestration and draining of foot abscess.

Study retrospective with relationship to the animal agressors for rabies in the municipal district of São Paulo, Brazil, in the period from 1988 to 1997 MV&Z
Ramos, Pedro Melguizo; Ramos, Pedro Silva.
All mammals are susceptible to rabies and are able to transmit this fatal disease to man. In urban space, dogs are the main vehicles for the transmission of the illness. The study presented here reports that dogs are the most involved animal species in accidents with humans. If the animal is observed for 10 days after the attack, not only rabies incidence in humans but also the number of rabies prophylactic treatments will decrease.

Main parasitic zoonosis transmitted by fish - a review MV&Z
Okumura, Maria Paula Martinez; de Pérez, Agar Costa Alexandrino; Espíndola Filho, Antonio.
Parasitic zoonosis transmitted by fish are an ever growing problem which calls the attention of researchers and public health authorities because of the health problems caused to the population after raw / rare fish consumption. In Brazil, dishes based on raw fish, such as "sushi" and "sashimis" are greatly consumed because of the influence of oriental culinary. Data show that there are zoonotic parasites in both Brazilian fresh and sea water fish. However, up to the present, there are no reports of human parasitism in Brazil (except for fagicolosis). It is believed that this statistics are related to the absence of diagnosis rather than the absence of the illness itself. Among diseases transmitted to man by fish consumption are anisakiasis;...

Diagnosis of Diabetes mellitus in dogs and management of long term insulin therapy with glycosilated hemoglobin level evaluation MV&Z
de Marco, Viviani; do Amaral, Ricardo Coutinho; Jericó, Márcia Marques; Silva, Ricardo Duarte; Simões, Denise Maria.
Twenty-four dogs, of different ages and breed (mongrels or not) were studied. The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of determining glycosilated hemoglobin for the diagnosis and future monitoring of diabetic dogs. Animals were divided in a control group (12 healthy animals presenting glycemia levels ranging from 80 to 120 mg/dl, during fasting), and a diabetic group (12 animals presenting glycosuria and glycemia levels up to 220 mg/dl during fasting). Glycosilated hemoglobin concentration was determined for all the animals in the beginning of the study and again after three months of insulin therapy. In the beginning of the trial, normal values for 100% of the control group. For the not treated diabetic group high levels were found. After...

Methods for evaluation of bone mineralization in foals MV&Z
Kerber, Claudia Ehlers.
Some of the main equine diseases are related to the musculoskeletal system, mainly during the bone developing in young animals. In São Paulo state, Brazil, the use of tropical grasses for grazing, the seasons and a general tendency to concentrate a large number of horses in small areas, frequently results on bone diseases, sometimes subtle, which depreciate the economic value of the horses and decrease the chance of a maximum performance. An early diagnosis of mineral imbalance play an important role once the bone diseases can be reversible when corrected on time. The author presents a review of physiology and pathophysiology of the bone. Also describe the methods available for diagnostic and suggest the phosphorus clearance as a sensitive, early, low cost...
